Grenette is a serif font family by Colophon Foundry, which is quite famous for designing serifs and other beautiful fonts. It draws from two notable sources: The Windsor, shown in Stephenson Blake & Co’s Wood Letter Specimen of 1915, and the Richmond Old Style, illustrated in DeLittle’s *Wood Type Specimens* of 1966. What comes from this is a nice balance of traditional charm and modern functionality.
The unusual green of Grenette is what makes it special. In characters like «n», «h», and «v» the interior is serif-less while the bold serifs stand out, while in other characters like «g», the interior is as bold as the serifs are, but much smaller. However, this deliberate asymmetry, with a handful of its subtle quirks, makes the typeface special. It’s organic and approachable but still versatile enough for a number of uses.
Working with weight is one of Grenette’s defining characteristics. The serifs are bulging and slightly rounded and give a softer, more light feel in lighter styles. As the weight climbs closer to Black, the serifs switch to solid, square, and sturdy looking: robust and confident. The result is a conformation that allows Grenette to have a unique yet coherent personality at every weight.
The upper case letters give an additional depth of expressiveness, especially in ALL CAPS situations. «U», «B», «R» and «D» characters have vertical stresses which bulge outwards, giving visual interest, texture. These are the details which make Grenette the perfect choice for producing designs that need personality and versatility.
